Modesto's mayor to give State of City

Modesto Mayor Jim Ridenour will give his fifth State of the City address Monday at

10 a.m. at the State Theatre, 1307 J St. His theme will be "Keeping our Fiscal House in Order." Ridenour is expected to focus on strategies that reflect responsible fiscal management, whether in running a household, a successful business, or a municipality. The event is open to the public. AccessModesto Community TV will replay the speech on Comcast channel 7 and Charter Cable channel 19. The days and times of the broadcasts are to be determined. A copy of the State of the City address will be available at www.modestogov.com.

Best-selling author signs books today

Jason F. Wright, New York Times best-selling author of the "The Wed- nesday Letters" and "Christmas Jars," will be in Turlock today at 7 p.m. to sign copies of his books. Wright also works as a political and public policy consultant

and is the founder of PoliticalDerby.com, a Web site that touts itself as a "haven for political junkies" and includes presidential candidate "power rankings." His articles have appeared in more than 50 newspapers and magazines across the United States. Wright will be at Borders Bookstore, 2831 Countryside Drive.


79 YEARS AGO: By virtue of defeating S.H. Bigler of Robesonia, Pa., in the final round of a correspondence chess match that had been in progress for more than three years,

W. Coburn Cook of Turlock won the minor chess championship of North America for 1929. Cook was the president of the Modesto Chess Club.
