Students from low-income families who attend schools on their second year on a federal probation list, called Program Improvement, can get money toward professional tutoring in math and English.
Area districts, including Patterson, Ceres, Empire, Keyes, Modesto, Salida, Sylvan, Riverbank, Oakdale and Turlock, give those students $800 to $2,800 worth of tutoring for the school year. The money goes toward tutoring at a state-approved company contracted by the school district or the county Office of Education.
School districts mail applications to eligible students in October or early November for the 2008-2009 school year. Information should also be available at each school office.
