Merced landowner Myers dies at 96

John W. Myers, a Merced County landowner, business executive and renowned test pilot during World War II, has died. Myers owned Flying M Ranch, a sprawling cattle operation along the eastern side of Merced County. Page B-5

Committee to look at towing charges

A Modesto Police Department proposal to increase charges for towing cars and trucks is scheduled to appear before the City Council's Safety and Communities Committee on Monday. The plan would bring a new franchise agreement to the city's towing companies, requiring them to meet certain standards to do business with the Police Department. The city would charge the companies a fee of $40 per tow in the first year of the three-year deal.

Relay for Life event kicks off Tuesday

The American Cancer Society's Relay for Life kicks off Tuesday. The celebration is at 6 p.m. at the DoubleTree Hotel, 1150 Ninth St. Learn about Relay for Life and how to start a team to help raise money for the fight against cancer. Sponsors also are needed. Join organizers for fun, refreshments, prizes and information. The relay is June 21-22 at Johansen High School.
