50 YEARS AGO: The speech and hearing department of Modesto City Schools began an experimental study of 1,000 elementary and junior high school students. It was done to determine if hearing could be measured using a simple transistor audiometer that weighed less than one pound. Testing began at El Vista and would continue until mid-March.

25 YEARS AGO: The Modesto Junior College women's 1,600-meter relay team was one of five quartets to qualify for the Foot Locker Indoor Track Meet (formerly called the Examiner Games) in Berkeley. The Pirates squad was the only junior college team in the field of four-year college teams.
