Police arrested a 17-year-old who tried to rob a Modesto man at knifepoint after a witness saw the teenager don a ski mask and demand money from the 46-year-old victim, authorities said.
The man withdrew cash from an ATM at Wells Fargo, 3424 Dale Road, at 4:30 p.m. Sunday, said police Sgt. Ed Steele.
As he was walking to his car, the teenager came at him. A witness yelled to the teen that he had called police. The teenager ran and police surrounded a Braden Avenue apartment complex, Steele said.
Shortly afterward, an officer saw a young man walking out of the complex who, except for his clothes, matched the assailant's description.

The teenager confessed after officers found the mask, weapon and other clothes from the attempted robbery in his backpack, Steele said. The victim and witness identified the teenager.
No one was injured and the teenager obtained no money. He is being held at juvenile hall on suspicion of armed robbery. Police ask anyone who saw the crime to call the Modesto police at 572-9551.
