TURLOCK -- After a two-day search for the man suspected of shooting a rival suitor, police arrested 38-year-old Brian Kenneth Willoughby on Thursday after a chase through a Turlock neighborhood.
Willoughby is suspected of shooting Eddie Rodriguez, 22, in the back of the head Tuesday morning as Rodriguez was getting ready to take a child to school, authorities said. Police said Rodriguez is dating Willoughby's former girlfriend.
Willoughby approached Rodriguez outside his home, where an argument broke out and led to the shooting. Police said they expect Rodriguez to survive.
Sgt. Steven Williams said police received an anonymous tip Thursday afternoon that Willoughby was on the 900 block of High Street in Turlock. They arrived to find a vehicle racing away. Williams said by the time they caught up with it at North Soderquist Road and Julian Street, the vehicle was empty.
But witnesses pointed in the direction in which they saw the driver leave, and police soon spotted a man they suspected to be Willoughby. Williams said they chased the man over fences in a neighborhood before finding Willoughby hiding under a tarp on the 1100 block of Park Street.
Williams said officers took Willoughby into custody on suspicion of attempted murder, being a felon in possession of a firearm and possession of a stolen vehicle.
Williams said Willoughby was taken to Emanuel Medical Center for treatment for a pre-existing medical condition before he would be booked into jail. As of Friday evening, Willoughby remained in the hospital.
