Modesto police are looking for a man who they say severely beat his estranged wife Sunday morning after ambushing her in her front yard.
The woman is in critical but stable condition at a hospital, Modesto police Sgt. Craig Gundlach said.
Police are searching for Juan Arturo Tostado, 29, of Modesto, who is wanted on suspicion of attempted murder. Tostado is described as Latino, 5 feet 8 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds. He has a goatee and a shaved head, Gundlach said. Tostado last was seen wearing a black-and-white checkered jacket with black pants.
The estranged wife, 44, arrived at her home in the 2500 block of Meadow Rue Drive about 5:45 a.m. and Tostado beat her unconscious, police said.
The woman's 14-year-old daughter heard something in the front yard. Gundlach said she looked outside and saw Tostado beating someone near the bushes. Covered in blood, Tostado chased the teenager into the victim's home, police said.
He left when he saw other people also were inside, Gundlach said.
The teen went outside and found her mother unconscious. The woman sustained serious injuries to her face, including cuts and broken bones, police re- ported.
Someone in the home called 911 and the woman was taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Police ask anyone with information about this incident or Juan Tostado's whereabouts to call CrimeStoppers at 521-4636. Callers to CrimeStoppers can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a cash reward.
