Nonprofit cultural groups can get aid

Nonprofit cultural organizations in Modesto can receive financial assistance from the city's Culture Commission. Application forms and policy criteria for aid in fiscal year 2008-09 are available online at www.modestogov.com/prnd (look under "Other Links") or at any of these locations:

The Parks, Recreation and Neighborhoods Department, 1010 10th St., Suite 4400; 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday

The McHenry Museum, 1402 I St.; noon to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday

The McHenry Mansion, 906 15th St.; 12:30 to 4 p.m. Sunday through Friday

King-Kennedy Memorial Center, 601 S. Martin Luther King Drive; 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday

The Stanislaus County Library, 1500 I St.; 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday

All completed application forms must be returned to the McHenry Museum no later than 4 p.m. Feb. 19.

Anti-theft tips

Modesto is experiencing a rash of auto thefts and residential and vehicle burglaries, police are reporting. Officials are offering weekly tips to protect your property from being stolen:

Use an inexpensive light timer when you are away and ask a neighbor to pick up your newspapers and mail.

New contest seeks romantic photos

Student hit, killed

A 24-year-old woman from La Grange was killed Monday while crossing a street on the first day of her last semester at Brigham Young University.

75 YEARS AGO: Hotel operator

H.T. Crow announced his candidacy for Modesto Irrigation District director from Modesto, bringing the number of candidates to an even half-dozen. Crow had been a resident and taxpayer of the district for 33 years. The election was to be held Feb. 1. The other candidates were J.S. West, J.R. Broughton, J.M. Culpepper, H.L. Beard and J. Frank Ferguson.

25 YEARS AGO: The Modesto Junior College stadium lights would be turned on every Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. during the winter months for local runners and joggers. The Modesto Shadowchase Running Club and the junior college were presenting the evening sessions to give runners a safe place to exercise.
