Modesto is experiencing a rash of auto thefts and residential and vehicle burglaries, police report. Officials are offering weekly tips to protect your vehicle from being stolen:
- Install a mechanical device that locks the steering wheel, column or brake to prevent the wheel from being turned more then a few degrees. You also can install a security system in your car.

75 YEARS AGO: Plans for a modern drive-in market at Ninth and H streets, representing an investment of more than $30,000, were announced by M.E. Angelo, an owner of the San Francisco Fruit Market. Angelo stated construction was to begin about Jan. 1, 1933, and would take about four months.
25 YEARS AGO: With a wife and two children to support, Rudy Salcido made a gutsy move. He put a sign on his back: "Unemployed -- Hire Me!" and walked the streets of Modesto. Jay Loschke, division manager for the L.M. Morris Co. on I Street, saw Salcido and hired him.
