SPECIAL OLYMPICS BOWLERS: Nearly 50 athletes will compete at the Merced County Special Olympic Regional Bowling Tournament today, which determines qualifications for upcoming Special Olympic matches. About 40 athletes from Merced County and 10 from Tuolumne County will vie for the top spot at Bellevue Bowl in Atwater. Athletes participating in the event range in age from teenagers to senior citizens. The bowlers have been practicing for about eight weeks for the tournament. The event starts at 4 p.m. with dinner for the athletes provided by the Livingston Kiwins. Athletes who qualify in this tournament will be eligible to compete in the Northern California State Bowling Championship, which takes place Dec. 1 in Fresno.
