50 YEARS AGO: Members of the Modesto Board of Education received a round of applause when they authorized construction to begin on the long-anticipated Downey High School student center project. The center would be a $50,000-plus building when completed but would cost about $15,000 because of the donated time, labor and materials.

25 YEARS AGO: The chairman of the board of Kmart Corp., Benjamin Fauber, flew to California for the grand opening of Turlock's new Kmart. The Turlock store was the 427th Kmart in the 13 states of Kmart's Western region.
