Debate on Monday

Modesto voters can take a good look at candidates for two City Council seats Monday night when the League of Women Voters hosts a debate at City Hall. Brad Hawn is defending his council Chair 6 against challenger Tom Maher, while four men are running to succeed Councilman Bob Dunbar in Chair 1. The debate will be broadcast live on Comcast Cable Channels 7 and 8 and Charter Cable Channel 19. Viewers may call in questions to 342-6290 and 342-6278. The debate begins at 6:30 p.m. in the basement chamber of Tenth Street Place, 1010 10th St.

Highways reopened

Officials reopened two mountain passes Saturday while snow kept Highway 108 over Sonora Pass closed 26.4 miles east of Strawberry to 5.3 miles west of Highway 395, according to the California Department of Transportation. Highway 120 over Tioga Pass and Highway 4 over Ebbetts Pass were reopened to traffic Saturday, according to Caltrans.

Free festival today

Today from noon to 6 p.m., you can see performances at the Gallo Center for the Arts for free during the International Heritage Festival's "An Afternoon of International Music and Dance" concert. Among the performers will be the Massenkoff Russian Folk Festival, Village Dancers of Modesto, Revival Center, the Venezuelan Music Project, Mar Alto Portuguese folkloric group, Annunciation Greek Folk Dancers and Ballet Folklorico los Falcones. The event includes a world information area, children's activities and a musical instrument "petting zoo." The Gallo Center is at 1000 I St., Modesto.
