Summer's Swan Song

The end of a perfect summer day finds the sun sinking into the Pacific Ocean west of Newport Beach, CA on Sunday August 19, 2007. Smoke from the massive Zaca fire--a 240,000 acre wildfire that burned for more than two months north of Santa Barbara in July and August--adds to the red sky above the setting sun. Summer officially came to an end Saturday and I thought, before we get too deep into fall, it would be nice to focus on some of the unpublished photos that Bee photographers captured during the past 90 days. The theme of today's "Picture This" is "Faces of Summer in Stanislaus County ... Plus One." The anchoring photo at left by Bee photographer Ted Benson, taken during a recent visit to Newport Beach, is just too beautiful to ignore. It truly captures the essence of summer's end -- a lone surfer, two couples and an empty lifeguard shack bid farewell to the sun as it slips below the horizon. I hope you enjoy this little look back at summer through the faces of Stanislaus County.
