Latino group to hear Turlock mayor speak

Turlock Mayor John Lazar will be the guest speaker at today's meeting of the Turlock Hispanic Leadership Council. The meeting is from noon to 1 p.m. at 300 E. Main St. and is open to the public. For more information, contact Jaime Alcaraz, Turlock HLC Chapter chairman, at 277-9513.

Local 'Band of Brothers' not heroic

Investigators are looking for a gang of home invaders dubbed the "Band of Brothers" because they're all related. Investigators said they believe that the group is responsible for home invasions in Merced and Sonoma counties, starting in April 2006. Page B-2

Denise Seymour's land is the perfect spot for an outdoor wedding -- overlooking the Stanislaus River, with stunning sunset views. But local law prohibits such events on agricultural land such as Seymour's. If Stanislaus County doesn't change its policy, Seymour says, the loss in rental fees will force her from her home.


50 YEARS AGO: Leslie Knoles, Modesto Junior College dean of men, believed that the four-year college approved for the Stanislaus County area would have little ultimate effect on growing MJC enrollment, Knoles told the Optimist Club. MJC had had 1,000 students five years before, and in 1957 enrollment was 2,100 students.

25 YEARS AGO: The California State University, Stanislaus, soccer team won its first game ever at the UC Davis campus by tripping the Aggies 2-1. Hanibal Yadager scored both of the Warrior goals, helping to improve the team record to 2-0.
