Turlock employees get back travel pay

The city of Turlock has paid more than $24,000 in back pay to employees who weren't adequately compensated for travel time over the past three years.

Young Idol finalists

The votes are in and 10 young people have been selected as finalists in the Modesto Symphony Orchestra's Young Idol competition. The winner of the talent contest will perform at the symphony's Holiday Pops concert at the Gallo Center for the Arts.

50 YEARS AGO: Modesto's off-street parking lots increased to a dozen with the opening of a 36-space facility at 14th and J Streets. A 10 cent an hour charge, with a three-hour time limit, was the rule in place for using the lot.

75 YEARS AGO: Faculty changes at Modesto High School included adding three teachers and the appointment of a librarian. W.K. Hilliard was a new member of the staff in agriculture, Evelyn Knapp joined the the girls physical education department, Gordon White joined the merchandising and sales divisions of the department of commerce, and Isabell Warren was appointed librarian.
