Modesto police took two men into custody after they reportedly ran away from a three-vehicle traffic collision Thursday evening on Briggsmore Avenue in east Modesto.
Ryan Bates, 22, was driving a Ford Mustang and was arrested on suspicion of felony hit-and-run, police reported. The front seat passenger, 27-year-old Michael Tunkel, was cited for possession of marijuana.
Bates and Tunkel were taken into custody about two blocks north of the crash site without further incident, Sgt. Jon Buehler said.
The hit-and-run collision occurred about 6:40 p.m. on Briggsmore Avenue, just west of Oakdale Road. Buehler said the Mustang was traveling south on Oakdale and made a right turn onto westbound Briggsmore at a high rate of speed. The car jumped over a center median and struck the driver-side rear end of a brown Mercedes waiting in the eastbound Briggsmore left-turn lane.

The Mustang continued until it collided head-on with a small, black Toyota sport utility vehicle behind the Mercedes.
Eastbound traffic was stalled traffic on Briggsmore for about an hour as authorities worked to clear the road.
A man driving the Mercedes and a woman riding in the Toyota complained of pain and were taken by ambulance to a nearby hospital, Buehler said, but it appeared their injuries were minor.
