Gallo Center for the Arts

A temporary donor wall is up near the landing of the grand staircase listing more than 200 donors who contributed $25,000 or more. Turlock Marble & Granite Works is responsible for the stone dedication plaque unveiled at the arts center's ribbon cutting Monday.

The Gallo Center for the Arts, at 10th and I streets in Modesto, holds its grand opening gala Sept. 27. The center has two theaters: the 1,252-seat Mary Stuart Rogers Theater and the 444-seat Foster Family Theater. www.galloarts.org, 338-2100.

Stealing a car takes only a few seconds

Want to see how long it takes to steal a car? Go to http://videos.modbee.com. Thursday, law enforcement and insurance company representatives staged a car theft to demonstrate just how easy and quick it can be. To guard against becoming a victim of a real theft, officials recommend the following:

  • Always lock the doors and close the windows.
  • Park in a secure and well-lighted area.
  • Conceal items of value and place all large packages in the trunk.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and call 911 to report suspicious activity.
  • Install warning devices such as audible alarms, Global Positioning Systems and alarm decals.

Bounty hunters track man to Idaho

Bounty hunters from Modesto tracked one of Sonora's "Most Wanted" suspects to a small Idaho town where he'd hidden for months, they said. They returned him to authorities earlier this week.

75 YEARS AGO: Mayor Harry Marks proclaimed Sept. 16-24 as Modesto Symphony Orchestra Week. In his proclamation, he urged all citizens to support the orchestra to continue its cultural contributions.

25 YEARS AGO: The Merced Irrigation District applied to the state Water Resources Control Board and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission for a preliminary permit that would let the district conduct a feasibility study for a proposed 70-megawatt hydroelectric plant on the south fork of the Merced River near Yosemite National Park. -- Karen Aiello
