BIKER HURT IN HIGHWAY CRASH: A Valley Springs man was injured Wednesday after his motorcycle rear-ended a Mercedes while entering the northbound lanes of Highway 99 in Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported. David Peters, 53, suffered a broken leg and was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center, said officer Tom Killian, a CHP spokesman. No other injuries were reported. The accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. in the highway's northbound lanes, just north of the I Street onramp. Rolando Quinonez, 74, of Modesto, driving a Mercedes sedan, and Albert Agabon, 43, of Sacramento, were also involved in the collision. Killian said Peters entered the highway and did not realize traffic ahead was slowing down, so the motorcycle rear-ended the Mercedes. Agabon was driving a work van and could not avoid the collision in front of him, so the van struck the motorcycle and the Mercedes, Killian said. The northbound lanes were blocked for about 30 minutes while authorities worked at the scene.

CHECKPOINT FRIDAY: Modesto police will conduct a sobriety checkpoint Friday night at an undisclosed location within the city. Eight officers and one sergeant will be at the checkpoint looking for drivers without valid licenses as well as drunken drivers. The checkpoints are funded by a $1 million grant from the state Office of Traffic Safety. The project is an effort to reduce the number of injuries and deaths in the Modesto area caused by drivers under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
