A fire started late Sunday afternoon at a recycling center in southeast Modesto, producing black smoke that was visible over a wide area.
Firefighters contained the blaze, which involved plastic stored outside a business whose name was not confirmed as of Sunday night. It is located on Mariposa Road in the Beard Industrial District.
Two firefighters were treated for smoke inhalation, said Battalion Chief Randy Anderson of the Modesto Fire Department. One was with the city and the other with the Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District, he said.
The cause of the fire was still under investigation, Anderson said.
