Sipherd Elementary School in east Modesto was on lockdown Monday afternoon while police officers searched the campus after a man ran into an after-school program claiming he was being chased by a gunman, authorities said.
Sipherd is part of the Empire Union School District. Sipherd is on East Orangeburg Avenue between Lakewood Avenue and Claus Road. Classes had ended for the day, but after-school programs were in operation.
Superintendent Dave Garcia said a man jumped the school fence and ran into a classroom with 15 to 20 students of various ages. The man told the teacher that two people were chasing him, and the teacher told him to get down, locked the classroom door and called police, Garcia said.
“She said he was very scared. She made that quick judgment call,” he said. “She told him, ‘Lie on the floor.’ Then she closed the door and the drapes and called police.”
Police arrived immediately and took the man into custody, Garcia said. Parents were all called and told to come pick up their children, he said.
The incident was over by shortly after 6 p.m. after a search of buildings on the campus. Details about the man were not immediately available, but Garcia said he was told police found no evidence of anyone chasing him. No gun was found, police said.
