A cute, sourdough-focused café has opened in Stanislaus County. Take a look inside
After I wrote a story saying Matkat Café would be coming to Oakdale, I found out the owner is my mother-in-law’s sister. So I took her with me when I went to check it out after it opened.
Katie Hudson celebrated the grand opening of her café Nov. 8. Opening a brick and mortar to accompany her sourdough bread business was serendipitous. It wasn’t in Hudson’s plans, but the opportunity arose when Cottonwood Café closed on Yosemite Avenue.
My Wednesday, Dec. 17, visit was a three-in-one. I got to follow up with my previous story, my mother-in-law got to visit with her sister and we got to celebrate my niece’s 12th birthday.
Bringing a small group also allowed me to try more menu items than I would have if I’d gone alone — and taste I did. I’m not exaggerating when I say we ordered half the menu.
I can’t name a favorite, but I can tell you I liked everything I tried.
Along with compliments on the food, I heard multiple customers commenting on how beautiful the space is — including the bathroom. Hudson’s daughter, Kayla Martin, is the café’s manager and designer.
In addition to the indoor seating, there is a large patio. It can also be rented to host events, Hudson said.
Matkat’s menu is sourdough-focused, which should come as no surprise considering that’s how Hudson started: as a sourdough bread and treats vendor at local farmers markets. Five years ago, however, she wasn’t even a bread maker.
She purchased the MatKat name, recipes and equipment from a woman in Santa Cruz in 2020 on a whim, because she loved the woman’s bread so much.
In how many way does Matkat Café serve sourdough?
Breakfast is served until 11 a.m. That part of the menu includes specialty sourdough toast ranging from $10 to $12 and breakfast sandwiches served on sourdough bread or sourdough bagels for $12 to $14.
The lunch menu includes sandwiches, seasonal soup, seasonal salad, pizza, charcuterie boards and small plates, including bruschetta dip.
Of course, Matkat also sells its whole sourdough loaves. Sweets include sourdough cookies and cinnamon rolls.
While you wait for your order, you can play one of the board games available on a dresser near the bathroom. I’ve never typed these words before, but you have to take a peek in the restroom even if you don’t have to use it — it is very cute, just like customers noted.
Matkat Café is open Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
