These major national, regional chains continue to expand their presence in Turlock
Big brands continue to love Turlock.
A handful of major chains will be expanding their presence in Stanislaus County’s second-largest city soon. Work is underway on some of the projects, while another has yet to get started.
Construction continues apace at the new Dutch Bros Coffee coming to the Turlock Town Center on Golden State Boulevard. The new drive-thru kiosk will be the city’s second. The popular West Coast coffee chain opened its first site in Turlock, on Crowell Road next to Stanislaus State, in 2020.
Dutch Bros has expanded rapidly in the Central Valley since its first location in Stanislaus County opened in Oakdale in 2019. Since then the Oregon-based company has opened the first Turlock site and two locations in Modesto — one on McHenry Avenue and another on Carpenter Road.
The second Turlock site has gone up quickly, after demolition earlier this year of the old Mundo’s Latin Grill building. The Mexican restaurant has moved to another location in the Turlock Town Center. Workers were applying some finishing exterior and landscaping touches to the building this week.
When finished the 862-square-foot building will have a walk-up window and double drive-thru lanes meant to help prevent long back-ups, which occurred at the Crowell Road site when it first opened. The company plans to hire around 25 workers. Dutch Bros Coffee spokeswoman Olivia Ortiz said the new shop is slated to open in early December.
Once it does open, expect plenty of caffeinated competition in the area. Kitty-corner from its location a new Starbucks with a drive-thru has also just opened. The new coffee shop, at the corner of West Canal Drive and Golden State, debuted this September. Plus, there’s always locally owned Alison’s Cafe House, on the northwest corner of Golden State and Canal.
Across town, in the always busy Monte Vista Crossings shopping center, work is underway to convert the former Office Max space into a Boot Barn. The Western and work wear brand is relocating to the larger spot from its longtime current Sixth Street location south of downtown.
A Boot Barn representative said the move should be finished before the end of the year, with sights set on a November transition. Once the new store is open, the Sixth Street site will be closed. The company will move its existing employees to the new location, and plans to hire more to staff the 18,200 square-foot space next to the BevMo! on Countryside Drive.
Also in the popular Monte Vista Crossings center, The Home Depot is planning to build a tool rental center addition to its existing location. The home improvement retailer on Countryside Drive had plans approved to build a 2,226-square-foot building to house the new expansion.
The new construction will be added to the existing Home Depot’s south side, alongside its lumber yard. Once completed, customers will be able to access it from the outside or from inside Home Depot. The new rental center will offer everything from small hand drills to large power tools and box-truck rentals.
Per plans submitted to the city, work was slated to start on the project in August with completion by December. But work has yet to get underway on the project, so likely look for it to finish sometime in 2022.
And finally, while not national, El Rosal is definitely a beloved and highly recognized area brand. The local chain of Mexican eateries closed its standalone Turlock site on Monte Vista Avenue mid-December, after selling the building. The move was to make way for an incoming cannabis dispensary.
This summer, it was reported during an economic update at a Turlock City Council meeting, that the restaurant would relocate to its original site in the Turlock Town Center. El Rosal will open next to the Mister Car Wash on the south end of the center. The location’s current occupant, Pho An 7, will move to a different location in the complex closer to the Goodwill store.
The shopping complex on Golden State has had a resurgence in recent years with the opening of the new Smart & Final Extra!, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and the incoming Dutch Bros. The city council report noted that since 2017 the Turlock Town Center has gone from 45% occupancy to 95% occupancy.
