Pedestrian hit by two cars dies on Highway 99

A man who was reportedly lying in the fast lane of Highway 99 near Ceres early Monday morning was pronounced dead at the scene after he was run over by two cars.

The incident occurred at about 12:40 a.m. on northbound Highway 99 north of Hatch Road.

The first driver, Victor Jimenez of Kings Beach, didn’t see the man until after he ran over him, said California Highway Patrol Officer Chuck Leon.

The driver behind Jimenez, 18-year-old Connor Heaslett of Turlock, saw Jimenez’s car run over something, causing sparks to fly.

Heaslett didn’t have enough time to avoid the man and also struck him, Leon said.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unknown why the man was in the roadway, if he was conscious or even alive when he was struck.

He has not been identified.

The middle and fast lanes of Highway 99 were closed for several hours while officers investigated the collision.
