On Merced's big day, city records first homicide of the year

MERCED - On the day when First Lady Michelle Obama came to town to speak to the first graduating class at the University of California Merced, the city recorded its first homicide victim of the year.

Police said a man was shot to death at a bar early this morning.

The identity of the victim, a 21-year-old black man, has not been released, and details about the crime remain sketchy.

The death was reported around 1:30 a.m. in the parking lot of the V Lounge at 1277 V Street, according to Lt. Tom Trindad. Police responded to the scene after receiving calls about a fight and a shooting.

The victim was on the ground when police arrived.
