MERCED - It was all smiles at today's Merced Irrigation District board meeting. That was because the irrigation district has ended its water curtailment from what until now had been a dry year.
Because of healthy reservoir levels from the rain storm that passed through the region last week -- the heaviest storm of the season -- the farmers of Merced will be able to get all the water they need. And, as one more piece of good news for farmers, MID decided to post any water fee hikes until 2010.
"This is good news for the valley. Not only are MID wells turned off,” said MID Assistant General Manager Hicham Eltal, but, "wells by growers will be turned off too."
