Modesto’s Congregation Beth Shalom hosted a Solidarity Shabbat on Friday night to show support for the black community after the June 17 shooting at a Charleston, S.C., church in which nine black people were killed by a white gunman. The Jewish congregation was joined by Frank Johnson, president of the Modesto Chapter of the NAACP, and the Rev. Darius Crosby of Greater Glory Community Church, among others. The service included memorial prayers for the Charleston victims and information about the ties between the Jewish and black communities, including many decades of involvement in the civil rights movement.
