Info: Members of the public are invited to a public meeting to review and comment on the Draft Environmental Assessment for the 7th Street Bridge Project. The meeting will be held in an open house format from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Basement Training Room of the City/County Government Building. The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), in cooperation with Stanislaus County and the City of Modesto, proposes to repair or replace the 7th Street Bridge to create a structurally and functionally sufficient bridge crossing over the Tuolumne River. The Draft EA and Section 4(f) are also available at Stanislaus County Department of Public Works, 1716 Morgan Road, Stanislaus County Library, 1500 I St; and at 7thstreetbridge.org and dot.ca.gov.

While getting warm, visitors will be treated to a free hot chocolate, hot apple cider, coffee, tea and a roaring fire. 50 YEARS AGO: It was reported that the Stanislays County Planning Commission was to consider a zoning use permit for the drag strip at the then vacated Vernalis Naval Air Station. Charlie J. Ferry and M. E. Saunders operated the drag strip under the business title, “Quarter Mile Strip, Inc.”. The former naval base was in an unclassified zone, and the use permit would allow the pair to operate the drag strip.
