A family member on Monday identified the person killed in a watercraft crash Sunday at the Modesto Reservoir as a 16-year-old from Oakland.
Efren David Valencia was taking part in his family’s annual Memorial Day camping trip to the reservoir when the Jet Ski he and his brother were riding and another Jet Ski collided with a boat, said Marta Valencia, his sister-in-law. Efren’s brother, Daniel, 28, suffered serious injuries. A third person also was injured, according to authorities.
Daniel Valencia is at Memorial Medical Center with a fractured hip and punctured kidney. Marta Valencia said family was awaiting word on surgery Monday.
For the Valencias, Memorial Day at the reservoir is a tradition. “All the family members were here,” Marta Valencia said, estimating 50 people took part in the trip. “We get there Friday and stay until Monday.”
Stanislaus County Sheriff’s deputies said the crash was reported about 11:50 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff’s officials said the boat and the jet ski collided between Berenda Beach and Vivians Cove at the reservoir. Deputies and firefighters responded to the area and found three people who had been hurt. All three were taken to hospitals, where the 16-year-old died.
The Sheriff’s Department was investigating the crash to determine what circumstances led up to the collision. Sgt. Anthony Bejaran said no further information would be released.
Family members have set up an online fundraiser for funeral expenses.
