Authorities are searching for a man who lost grasp of his raft-like inflatable in the Stanislaus River at Knights Ferry on Tuesday afternoon.
The man and his friend, both in their 20s, hiked from the Knights Ferry recreation area parking lot and got into the water holding on to the raft-like inflatable about two miles east of the bridge, said Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Sgt. Kevin Davis.
Before reaching the bridge, they encountered rapids, where both lost their grip.
Neither were wearing life vests, authorities said.

One of the men nearly drowned, but made it to shore and was taken to a local hospital, Davis said.
His friend continued downstream and had not been located. By 6 p.m., the search was suspended.
Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District had a boat in the water searching for the missing man. The Sheriff’s Department helicopter also was used for the search.
