Sheriff’s deputies and firefighters searched the Tuolumne River in Modesto on Friday night for more than an hour for a woman who reportedly jumped off the Seventh Street Bridge.
Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Greg Buck said deputies were dispatched around 9 p.m. on a report of a woman jumping off the west side of the bridge toward the river’s south bank. Modesto and Ceres fire as well as Stanislaus Consolidated Fire Protection District took part in the search.
Modesto fire and Consolidated each put a boat into the river to search for the woman, and the Sheriff’s Department had an aircraft search. Buck said deputies also were interviewing witnesses.
Sheriff’s Sgt. Joshua Sandoval said the search was called off around 10:20 p.m., but firefighters could resume the search Saturday.

Sandoval said authorities were on scene quickly and had the resources to conduct a search but the current could have carried the woman down river, or she could be trapped underwater or could have gotten out of the river. “Any one of those is an option at this point,” he said.
This is the second time in three days that authorities had received a report that someone had jumped off a Modesto bridge and into the Tuolumne River. On Wednesday afternoon, witnesses say a man jumped off the Ninth Street Bridge into the water.
Crews searched for a few hours but did not find anyone.
