A 79-year-old woman died after she was struck by a pickup on East Whitmore Avenue next to Hughson High School on Tuesday night.
Stanislaus County Sheriff’s Department deputies were called about 8 p.m. The pedestrian, identified as Evelyn Mendosa, of Ceres, died at a hospital.
The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with deputies.
Sgt. Anthony Bejaran, spokesman for the Sheriff’s Department, said neither alcohol nor drugs appear to be factors in the accident. He also said it does not appear the driver will be cited.

The department’s Major Accident Investigation Team continues to probe the accident.
It was not immediately known where Mendosa was when she was struck. The area where the pickup came to a stop – next to one of the school’s parking lots – is somewhat dark. The pickup was in the eastbound lane about 100 yards east of Seventh Street.
That stretch of road has the school on the north and largely rural property to the south.
