Torrey Kannon is thankful his 5-year-old stepdaughter was not home during her usual nap time Friday afternoon when a car crashed into her bedroom.

The front of the vehicle protruded several feet into the bedroom of the home on Sunland Way in east Modesto and struck the child’s bed.

Kannon was home alone at the time of the crash. He didn’t realize the loud “kaboom” he heard had left a large hole in his home until he went to the front of his house and saw the Kia in the front yard.

The driver, a woman who lives in the neighborhood, told police she believes she fell asleep at the wheel while driving west on Fairbairn Drive, which intersects with Sunland.

“She wakes up when she feels the collision occur,” said Modesto police Officer Eric Schuller. “She looks up and sees that she continued down the road and crashed into this house here on Sunland. She has no real memory of what happened. She just remembers driving and then all of a sudden she was in this (crash).”

The woman was evaluated by paramedics at the scene but was not taken to a hospital.

As Kannon waited for his landlord to arrive at the home following the crash, he didn’t know whether he and his family would be able to stay in the home Friday night.
