Sister Cities program

Modesto Sister Cities International invites all interested students to apply for its annual summer exchanges to Karume, Japan; Aguascalientes, Mexico; or Laval, France.

A committee will select up 20 high school students to take part in the exchanges, which range from 5 to 10 days, depending on the location. College students are invited to apply to the French program.

Cost, including airfare, is about $1,300 for Japan and France, and $500 for Mexico. UC Merced scholarship available

Merced School Employees Federal Credit Union has donated $25,000 to start an endowed scholarship fund to benefit students at the University of California at Merced.

The scholarship is designated to be awarded annually to an undergraduate student. To be eligible, students must be an MSEFCU member, or the spouse or child of a member.

Christian scholarships

In memory of former Modesto City Schools trustee John L. Hollis, Christian Public Servants awards several $500 scholarships annually to students planning a career in public service. Hollis was a graduate of Modesto Junior College and California State University, Stanislaus, and a respected businessman. Recipients of the John L. Hollis Scholarships must be seniors in high school, recent high school graduates or college students with a declared intention of preparing for a career in public service, such as teaching, law enforcement, fire safety, nursing, public administration and political science. Scholarships will be awarded on the basis of academic achievement, participation in church and/or Christian ministries, plus community service. Applications are due March 15.
