A Holocaust survivor will be part of a discussion Sunday, March 6, following a special screening of Academy Award-winning film “Son of Saul” at the State Theatre.

The Congregation Beth Shalom event will feature Gloria Lyons, an author and Holocaust survivor, as well as Professor Richard Weikart of the Department of History at California State University, Stanislaus, and local Therapist Barbara Israels.

The panel discussion will be led by Rabbi Shalom Bochner and will include questions from the audience.

“Son of Saul” is a drama about a Sonderkommando at the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp in 1944. It tells the story of a concentration camp inmate tasked with burning the corpses of his own people who discovers the body of a boy he takes for his young son. He must choose between participating in a clandestine uprising being planned among the prisoners, or securing a proper Jewish burial for his child.

The Hungarian film won the Academy Award last Sunday for best foreign film.

The Congregation Beth Shalom screening is at 6 p.m. today, March 6, at the State Theatre, 1307 J St., Modesto. The discussion will follow. Although the film is rated R, students can attend for free; general tickets are $20 and available at or at the door.

The State Theatre will continue its regular screenings of “Son of Saul” through Friday, March 11.
