Bee Healthy: What Kind of Eater Are You?

I am amazed how complicated eating has become! The definitions of how we should eat or what we should eat are multi-faceted and, quite frankly, downright confusing.

It is good to be mindful of what we are eating; it is too easy to overeat if we are not paying attention. I recommend reading some of the excellent books on this topic.

Are your foods natural?

Natural is a word that somehow makes us feel better about those packaged foods. Guess what: There is no official definition for what a natural food is. Really, how natural can a bag of potato chips be?

Maybe you are a foodie?

My sparkling water label asked me if I was a foodie. I went to the link, and sure enough a foodie is someone who likes food and likes to share recipes. So, maybe you are a foodie, too.

What in the world is clean eating?

To get a grip on the real meaning on clean eating, I decided to ask some of my friends at the gym what they thought. After all, these people work out, so I am sure they are concerned about eating, too. Here are some of their responses:

  • 1. Make sure your fruits and veggies are washed thoroughly.
  • 2. Eat mostly fruits and veggies.
  • 3. Eat fewer processed foods, more natural foods.
  • 4. Eat from the food pyramid (which is now My Plate).
  • 5. Eat less fat and sugar.

My friends are probably correct, but you can see how many of the phrases that we hear about eating have many different meanings. So don’t overthink eating; go back to basics. I found a poster recently from World War I. I liked what it said and I think the principles are basic and still applicable. Here it is:


  • 1. Buy it with thought
  • 2. Cook it with care
  • 3. Serve just enough
  • 4. Save what will keep
  • 5. Eat what would spoil
  • 6. Home-grown is best
  • 7. Don’t waste it!

Great advice in 1918, great advice in 2015.
