Two people were killed early Friday morning when their BMW crashed into a big rig on Highway 99, north of Madera, and rolled several times, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The crash happened about 2 a.m. According to the CHP, the male driver and female passenger in the 2008 BMW 128i were traveling south in the fast lane, approaching the big rig.
The Freightliner, driven by Thomas M. Weaver, 50, of Dos Palos, was also traveling south, just south of Avenue 181/2, according to the CHP. Weaver told officers he was going about 55 mph in the slow lane when the collision occurred.
Officers reported that the BMW, for unknown reasons, suddenly swerved into the back of the big rig and then rolled. The CHP said neither person in the BMW was wearing a seat belt and both were thrown onto the freeway.
