A Merced teenager who was shot and killed Thursday night has been identified as 18-year-old Felipe Coronado Jr., the Merced County Coroner’s Office confirmed.
A 16-year-old boy was also shot during the same incident. He was reported to be in stable condition Thursday at a regional hospital, according to the Merced Police Department.
No arrests have been made and the motive for the shooting remained unclear early Friday.
Capt. Tom Trindad on Friday said it was still too early to know whether Thursday’s homicide was related to the Oct. 2 death of Steven Mays Jr., who was shot and killed exactly one week earlier in the 1100 block of M Street. No arrests have been made in that case.
Police received numerous reports of shots fired at 8:32 p.m. in the area of Childs Avenue and M Street. Officers found both victims suffering from gunshot wounds. They were rushed to an area hospital by Riggs Ambulance for medical treatment, police said.
Coronado was pronounced dead a short time later, police said.
The death marks the 12th homicide reported this year in Merced and the 26th in Merced County. A total of 29 homicides were reported in Merced County in 2013, which officials said was a record high. Just four of the 2013 homicides were reported in the city of Merced.
