Modesto police are investigating the death of a 21-year-old man shot in the Shackelford neighborhood – off Crows Landing Road north of Hatch Road – Saturday night.
Modesto police responded to a call of shots fired and a man down next to a bicycle in the roadway near the intersection of Santa Fe and El Paso avenues just before 11 p.m., said Lt. Craig Gundlach.
David Cruz of Modesto had been shot multiple times. He was taken by ambulance to Doctors Medical Center, where he was later pronounced dead.
“From the information we have, it appears there was a confrontation between two gangs,” Gundlach said.

Cruz was with 31-year-old Adam Botello when they were involved in a confrontation with a group of at least two other people. Someone from the group shot Cruz, and everyone, including Botello, fled the scene, the lieutenant said.
Detectives found Botello at a home in the neighborhood and arrested him on suspicion of murder and participating in a criminal street gang. Botello is not suspected of shooting Cruz, but was arrested under the felony murder rule, which holds liable anyone participating in a felony – in this case, gang participation – during which someone is killed.
Detectives continue to follow leads and search for the shooter and other suspects.
The homicide was the first this year in Stanislaus County.
