Family and friends of a young man who was killed at a Riverbank house party over the weekend gathered at his home in west Modesto for a candlelight vigil Monday evening.
Damien King, 18, died after being shot at about 11:30 p.m. Saturday at a ranch-style home in the 4700 block of Terminal Avenue, where a large party was held.
“He was my heart. They took my baby,” said King’s mother, Angie Prieto Sheppard. Standing in her doorway Monday, she wept as she clutched one of her son’s shirts.
“People need to think before they do things because you can’t come back from this.”
King was the father of a baby girl named Aliah who will be 1-year-old in January. He was a senior at Modesto High School.
Prieto Sheppard, who works as a behavioral Health Specialist, said King also wanted to help people and planned to study to become a juvenile probation officer after graduation.
King, apparently like many in attendance at the party Saturday, learned about the event through social networking sites, according to his best friend, Jesus Alcantar. Alcantar also attended the party and said neither he nor King knew the people who hosted the is.
A man at the home Monday said in Spanish that he did not want to comment about the party or the shooting.
We'll have more on this story later tonight.
