A report on crop conditions for Merced County for the week ending Oct. 3 has been released by the Merced County Agricultural Commissioner’s office.
The rice harvest is about 40 percent complete. Weed control spraying continues to be done on small grain fields.
The eighth cutting of alfalfa has begun, and rye and corn silage harvests continue. New alfalfa fields are being planted, and the dry bean harvest continues. Cotton defoliation is underway.
Almond, pistachio, wine grape, fig and raisin harvests continue. Peach harvest is complete, and walnut harvest has begun.
Freezer bean, bell pepper, cantaloupe, honeydew and sweet potato harvests continue. Parsley and watermelon harvest is winding down.Pasture and range conditions are good, with supplemental feeding of hay and nutrients to livestock continuing.-- Carol Reiter
