A 30-year-old documented gang member was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of hiding a gun and ammunition from law enforcement.
Omar Alvarez was taken into custody after deputies with the Merced County Sheriff's Department STAR Team conducted a compliance check around 9:30 a.m. at his residence in the 900 block of Loughborough Drive, according to Deputy Tom MacKenzie, sheriff's spokesman.
Detective Dustin Witt of the sheriff's STAR Team discovered that Alvarez had hidden a .38 caliber revolver and a box of ammunition in a clothes basket inside a bedroom closet, MacKenzie said. Also located during the search was about 10 grams of marijuana.
Alvarez, as a convicted felon, isn't allowed to possess the gun or ammunition. Also living in the residence was a 6-year-old girl.
Alvarez was booked into Merced County Jail on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a handgun and ammunition, child endangerment, participating in a criminal street gang and violation of probation.
He's being held without bail.
