Police are seeking information on a shooting that took place Sunday afternoon.
Officer Matthew Haywood spotted a black 1989 Chrysler New Yorker traveling faster than 100 mph on East Bellevue Road at 4:05 p.m. Sunday. When Haywood pulled over the vehicle, a 16-year-old passenger from Stockton indicated he had been shot in the hand and the driver was taking the boy to the hospital, said Atwater police Detective Armando Echevarria.
The boy was taken to Mercy Medical Center Merced and treated for a non-life-threatening injury, Echevarria said.
The driver, Steven Ruelas, 21, of Atwater told officers he was driving in the area of Determine Drive and East Bellevue Road when the car drove past a group of people; the 16-year-old felt a sharp pain in his hand. The car was struck at least once by a round of unknown caliber.

Ruelas was arrested on unrelated charges of suspicion of possession of marijuana and carrying a concealed weapon. The weapon was a pool cue that had been modified to resemble a small club, Echevarria said.
The 16-year-old is being uncooperative with police, so detectives are asking for anyone with information on the crime to contact Detective Adolfo Lomeli at (209) 357-6387 or to call the department's tip line at (209) 357-6390.
