Away in a manger,
No crib for his bed,
The little Lord Jesus
Lay down his sweet head,
The stars in the sky
Look down where he lay,
The little Lord Jesus
Asleep on the hay.
The Christmas hymn is a familiar one to most people, sung by countless children's choirs every December.
What do those children really think about Christmas? The Bee talked with first- and second-graders at a midweek program at Modesto Covenant Church and asked, "What's your favorite part of the Christmas story?" Their answers and their art were often predictable, sometimes surprising, and always delightful. Here's a sampling:
"The one thing I like about Christmas is it is Jesus' birthday. My favorite part about the Christmas story is when Mary had to travel all the way to Bethlehem because they followed the star to get there."
"My favorite part about the Christmas story is when the angel came into Mary's dream two times because it was cool to me."
"My favorite part of the Christmas story is when Jesus was born because then he could come into our hearts."
"Christmas is special because it's God's birthday."
"My favorite part about the Christmas story is when Jesus is born. I like it because he came to earth and he is always there for us."
My favorite part of Christmas is Jesus being born. One day I will be with him and see how cool heaven is. I think heaven is all golden. I can't wait to see Jesus, Merry and God.
I like the part about the angel of the Lord. My favorite is the snow.
I love Christmas because of Jesus, God, Mary, Joseph and the angel.
I drawed the first Christmas and the angel that sent Jesus to Mary and the donkey that brought Mary and Joseph to Jerusalem.
I like when baby Jesus was born and when the shepherds came to see him and said (gasp), they were so surprised.
Jesus was God's son. He was born in the manger. He came to Earth. My favorite part of the story is when Jesus is born.
My favorite part of the Christmas story is Jesus! I like Jesus because he is awesome.
My favorite part of the Christmas story was when Jesus was born. I like to play in the snow. I like to open my presents.
Christmas is not all about presents and Santa. It is Jesus' birthday! This is the story of Jesus' birthday: Mary and Joseph were looking for a place to stay. They asked a man for a place to stay. All he had was a stinky barn. Jesus was born in a manger in the barn. The end.
My favorite part about the Christmas story is when the angels came to the shepherds and told them about Jesus because God wanted them to know about the savior.
I love Christmas because Jesus is born on Christmas Eve. That's my favorite part of Christmas!
I love Christmas because I love getting presents and opening them and I love angels because they are beautiful and I love to decorate Christmas trees. But most of all because it's Jesus' birthday!
My favorite holiday is Christmas. My favorite thing at Christmas is Santa. I just love Christmas! Christmas is so cool!
I like the Christmas story because I like singing the songs about it. My favorite is "Away in a Manger."
My favorite thing about Christmas is cars and whistles. Jesus' birth is true, God's gift to us.
I like the Christmas story because I like to get presents and I love the story of Jesus' birth.
Christmas is the best holiday because it's a time with your family, and Jesus was born on Christmas. You also get presents. My favorite part of the story was when Jesus was born and all the wise men gave him presents, just like we get them from Santa.
I like the Christmas story. It is Jesus' birthday and he was born on December 25th so we can celebrate it.
Christmas is about when Jesus was born. I like to celebrate Christmas with my family.
My favorite part of the Christmas story is when the wise men followed the star and found baby Jesus.
My favorite part of the Christmas story is that God sent down Jesus and that the shepherds knew something special was happening.
My favorite part of the Christmas story is that God put a special star in the sky to tell people about Jesus.
Christmas is a time to get together because it is our savior's birthday. It is a time to enjoy our family. My favorite part of the story is when Mary gave birth. Do you know what is amazing? It is that God gave his one and only son for us.
My favorite part about the Christmas story is when Jesus was born. If he wasn't born, then we wouldn't have Christmas.
