CALLING ALL TEACHERS: Teachers have until next Saturday to sign up for seminars that can increase their knowledge about farming, food processing and related scientific topics. They will be held June 15-18 at Modesto-area locations. The topics include plant genetics, soil, nutrition and renewable energy. The sites include Fiscalini Cheese Co., the Frito-Lay Sun Chip plant and the ConAgra tomato cannery. The cost is $15 per day, $25 for the two days involving genetics, or $50 for all four days. GET CLOSE TO NATURE: The fifth annual Pick and Gather at Riverdance Farms will take place May 30-31 along the Merced River near Livingston. It will feature fruit-picking, live music, crafts, children's activities and nature walks. The main event, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, costs $10 for adults and $5 for children. Saturday evening and Sunday activities have extra charges. The event is hosted by farmers Bill Thompson and Cindy Lashbrook, with help from numerous sponsors.
