SACRAMENTO -- Alannah Johns was a big hero for the Davis High softball team Saturday.
Johns hit a walk-off, solo home run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Spartans to a 5-4 victory over Franklin of Elk Grove in a Division I Sac-Joaquin Section playoff game. Johns' homer came after Elk Grove had tied the game with three runs in the top of the inning. The hit prevented extra innings, and Davis finished the day with a 10-5 victory over Napa.
San Nunes had walked to start the inning, but was picked off at second after a pop-out. Johns said she knew it was an important at-bat. She connected for her sixth home run of the season, sending a first-pitch fastball over the left-field fence.
"As soon as I hit it, I thought I got enough of it, but I still watched just to make sure," Johns said. "Then I started celebrating. This is my biggest. I haven't hit a home run in a spot like this."
Against Napa, Kai Begonia hit a three-run double in the fifth and scored on a Brie Castijella double. The Spartans play Pleasant Grove on Monday at 5 p.m.
SHELDON 7, BEYER 0 -- Jolene Henderson, ranked No. 2 in the country by ESPNrise.com, pitched a no-hitter over the depleted Patriots, striking out 15.
LODI 11, TURLOCK 1 -- The Flames scored five unearned runs with two outs in the third inning to pick up momentum.
PLEASANT GROVE 1, BUHACH COLONY 0 -- UCLA-bound battery Ally Carda and Alyssa Timalua teamed up for a one-hit shutout of the Thunder.
JIM ELLIOT 3, BVC 1 -- The Lions fell in the Division VII championship to Jim Elliot for the second year in a row.
