A Turlock man died and two other people were injured Wednesday when a van and a car collided at a rural intersection south of Modesto, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The 69-year-old man was pinned inside a white 1997 Toyota Corolla until firefighters freed him, said officer Eric Parsons, a CHP spokesman. He said the man was flown to Memorial Medical Center in Modesto, where he was pronounced dead. Authorities did not release the man's name pending family notification. Parsons said Severino Lopez, 76, suffered minor injuries, and his wife, Petra Lopez, 73, suffered moderate injuries. He said the Turlock couple were taken by ambulance to Emanuel Medical Center in Turlock.

Severino Lopez was driving a white 1999 Ford van, and his wife was the passenger. The crash occurred about 12:45 p.m. at East Monte Vista Road and North Central Avenue, just east of Crows Landing Road. Parsons said the Corolla was heading south on Central about 55 mph, which is the speed limit. He said the van was heading west on Monte Vista and had stopped at a stop sign at Central.

At this intersection, Monte Vista has stop signs and Central does not. The van entered the intersection and moved into the path of the Corolla, Parsons said. The Corolla veered to the right to avoid a collision, but the car's left side struck the van's right front end, he said.

No arrests were made, and alcohol or drugs did not appear to be a factor in the crash, Parsons said.
