FILM: 'THE VISITOR'

Info: MJC's Civic Engagement Project presents "The Visitor." This free movie is about a depressed professor whose life turns around after meeting an immigrant couple. In addition to rediscovering the joy of living, he discovers the secrecy surrounding U.S. immigration policies in the post-Sept. 11 era as well as the oppressive insecurity of being a refugee. MJC NURSING SCHOLARSHIPS BARBECUE DINNER

When: Friday, 6 to 8 p.m.

Where: Mary Stuart Rogers Center, Modesto Junior College West Campus on Blue Gum Avenue

Info: Sponsored by Modesto Junior College Nursing Alumni, the theme is "Celebrating Tomorrow's Nurses Today." Proceeds help provide scholarships for nursing students. The dinner is $20 for general, $15 for seniors, $12 for children. For tickets, call 575-6569.

CELEBRATE MJC ATHLETICS WINE & FOOD TASTING

Where: Modesto Junior College East Campus, 435 College Ave., in the gymnasium

Info: This event supports the 21 sports teams of MJC. It features wines from E.&J. Gallo Winery, Quady Winery, Bogle Winery, McManis Family Vineyard, Trinchero Winery and Barefoot Winery; gourmet dishes from more than 15 restaurants and caterers; and a silent auction. A TASTE FOR MENTORING

Info: This is a dessert contest showcasing creations from Tuolumne County restaurants as a fund-raiser for the Mentoring Works program. STOCKTON

OPENING DAY ON THE DELTA

When: Saturday, noon

Where: The parade begins in front of the San Joaquin Yacht Club on Dutch Slough near the Bethel Island Bridge

Info: A blessing of the fleet and discharge of a cannon will begin the parade, which will proceed around Bethel Island, going clockwise. Boats will return to the club about 2:45 p.m. Boats will be judged on theme, flags and pennants; classics (before 1960); and small boats, including personal watercraft and dinghies. $20 per person.


TURLOCK

SPAGHETTI DINNER

When: Friday, 6 p.m.
