    Info: The Central California Cage Bird Club will host the 55th annual Canary and Finch Show. Birds to be judged will be Colorbred, Type, and American singers. More than 300 birds will be judged. The third annual Bird Mart also will be held. A large variety of birds will be for sale. Cages, plants and supplies also will be available. For more information, call Terese Davis at 869-5066.

    Where: The Fruit Yard restaurant, Geer-Albers Road and Highway 132, between Empire and Waterford

    Info: The Irish Cultural Society of Stanislaus County will host Irish Authors Night. Dinner will be served and there will be live Celtic music throughout the evening, as well as bagpipers from the Emerald Isle Pipe Band. Tickets are $26 and will be sold at the door.     Info: Actress, producer and TV host Ricki Lake takes a look at maternity care in the United States in "The Business of Being Born," sponsored by the Civic Engagement Project. The film weaves several birth stories with research by Lake and the film's director, Abby Epstein.   • OPERATION IRAQ CHILDREN DRIVE
  • When: Monday through Oct. 25

    Where: California State University, Stanislaus, 801 Monte Vista Ave.

    The Turlock American Legion Riders and the California State University, Stanislaus, Student Veterans Organization and the university are collecting school supplies, toys, sports equipment and shoes for children in Iraq. Donation sites will be set up around campus. The Lt. Dan Band, featuring actor Gary Sinise, will perform at the university on Oct. 25. For more information, call 667-3997.

  • When: Saturday, 10 a.m.

    Where: Coulterville Community Club, Broadway and Cemetery Street

    Info: Coulterville Soap Box Derby racing heats get under way at 10 a.m. down Broadway. The Old School House serves as the race headquarters. Cash prizes of $100 for first, $75 for second and $50 for third will be awarded. There is no entry fee; maximum weight for vehicle and driver is 350 pounds; age cap is 17.
