It's time to stop and smell the flowers, marvel at some premier gardens and help a good cause as the Turlock Family Network holds its eighth annual Chemin de Fleur garden tour May 10.
Five gardens, located in Turlock and Hilmar, will be on display from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
This year's crop of gardens includes:
A country estate in Hilmar. The homeowner created a parklike setting with an array of trees, perennials, bulbs and flowers that bloom from spring to fall. Plants and greenery -- wisteria, dogwood, magnolia, lilac, sweet pea, citrus and dogwood trees -- were selected for fragrance and easy maintenance.
A 29-year-old garden with a European flair. The front yard garden includes a pergola and lots of shade-loving plants, including camellias and azaleas. The back yard includes a waterfall and an area for outdoor entertaining.
A garden designed around a home built in 1910. One of highlights is a brick fireplace with a water feature.
A small shade garden featuring hydrangea and large-leafed bergenia. The homeowner added a bit of living history to the space by incorporating plants from her grandmother's garden.
A garden featured on last year's tour makes a return appearance. The massive garden includes about two acres of landscaping and several tributes to the owners' Portuguese heritage, including a replica of an Azores home a working brick oven for cooking. There's also a man-made lake stocked with fish and a large gazebo with an attached outdoor kitchen. The owners have added vineyards to the grounds since last year's tour.
The annual Chemin de Fleur garden tour is one of Turlock Family Network's biggest fund-raisers of the year. Founded in 1986, the nonprofit organization is devoted to preventing child abuse in young families.
