Three members of the Modesto Junior College Speech Team recently won awards at the Phi Rho Pi National Tournament. Jon Cottrell took a first-place gold medal in debate and a third- place bronze medal with his partner, Rebecca Benjamin, in parliamentary team debate. Danielle Lawson brought home two second-place silver medals in dramatic interpretation and prose interpretation. Benjamin and another team member, Jennifer Ramirez, recently received scholarships to University of the Pacific because of their success on the speech team. Lawson received a speech scholarship from Point Loma University.
Central Catholic High School senior John Juarez has accepted a $144,000 scholarship to attend the University of Notre Dame. John was also offered scholarships at Duke University, Georgetown University, Santa Clara University and several other schools. In addition, John was accepted to Cornell University and the University of California at Berkeley. John is the son of Ralph and Michele Juarez. His brother Thomas attends Princeton University and his other brother, Nate, attends Notre Dame.
Another Central Catholic senior, Roman Acost, has been offered several scholarships. Among them: $40,000 at the University of Portland, $60,000 at Gonzaga University and a $16,700 grant at Syracuse University. He also received a $5,000 athletic scholarship for running track. Roman is the son of Steve and Kathleen Cleek of Salida.
Central Catholic senior Stephanie Armstrong has signed a letter of intent to play volleyball for Franklin & Marshall College, Pennsylvania. In addition, Stephanie has been awarded the Franklin & Marshall Presidential Scholarship for $25,700 per year. She is the daughter of Ken and Lisa Armstrong of Ripon.
Recipients of the John L. Hollis Christian Public Service Award have been announced. The award is given to students preparing to enter a career in public service. It was named after Hollis, a former Modesto City School Board trustee.
Winners are Cameron Croasdale of Beyer High, David Misslbeck of Central Catholic, and Amanda Westberg of Almond Valley Academy.
